Psalm 85:
 “Our God and Us: Together”
“Righteousness will go before Him,
and shall make His footsteps our pathway”

This is a prayer psalm of “thankfulness for the removal of wrath and the return of favor.”  The people of God had sinned, been chastised, repented, and were now grateful to be able to rejoice in Him again.  Of all the lessons that people need to learn, it is certain that this one is high on the list: accept the chastisement of God when you sin, and humble yourself quickly before Him so that the punishment and consequences of the sin can be as minimal as possible.  On the other hand, humble repentance on the part of God’s people is a very uncommon thing.  It was so in “Bible times”—and it appears to be so today.
The psalm has four parts—all of which are simple to read and understand.  Let us read and understand—and then let us implement them every time we need to.

OUR GOD HAS DONE THESE THINGS (85:1-3).
“Lord, You have been favorable to Your land; You have brought back the captivity of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all their sin. Selah You have taken away all Your wrath; You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.”
I wonder if we understand even one percent of the kindness of God.  Jacob (which represents the whole nation) had sinned and been in some kind of captivity. They had been the objects of the wrath of God.  But here are some things that God had applied to their sinful condition: favor, return from captivity, forgiveness, covering, removal of wrath, turning from fierce anger!  They were responsible for their sin; they deserved their punishment; and they did not deserve any of the good things He did for them.  But He did it anyway.  Now God does not do such things unless we obey all of the commands He gives us to obey—but have you ever thought about the fact that there are not enough commands for us to obey to ever deserve the goodness He has to offer?  Our obedience is essential (John 14:15), but it cannot put us in the position of deserving the kind mercies of Jehovah.
OUR GOD: PLEASE DO THESE THINGS (85:4-7).
“Restore us, O God of our salvation, And cause Your anger toward us to cease. Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations? Will You not revive us again, That Your people may rejoice in You? Show us Your mercy, LORD, And grant us Your salvation.”
These verses indicate the intense feelings of the people when they realized what they had done.  It is good for us to finally see ourselves as we are so that we can come to Him for remission.  But let me make a suggestion: Let us use this passage as a motivation to keep from getting in such a condition!  Let us learn from their “mistakes!”  Read it again, and think about the horrible feelings that they had about themselves.  Three times the poet says, “Will You…?”  The YOU is emphatic.  He alone can do that which the people need, and He has pledged that He will do it when we approach Him as He desires (Kirkpatrick, p. 512).
PEOPLE OF GOD: LET US DO THESE THINGS (85:8,9).
“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly. Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land.”
A songwriter once wrote, “Accentuate the positive—eliminate the negative.”  Let us use this phrase to learn the idea of verses 8 and 9.  Let us accentuate obeying God, with all of its good results.  And let us eliminate the folly of sin from our lives, with all of its disgusting results. This will lead to salvation and glory!
TOGETHER, GOD AND WE ARE ON THE SAME PATHWAY (85:10-13).
“Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed. Truth shall spring out of the earth, And righteousness shall look down from heaven. Yes, the LORD will give what is good; And our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before Him, And shall make His footsteps our pathway.” (NKJ)
Some of the greatest words in the Bible are brought together in this last portion of Psalm 85.  They remind us of the potential that exists for a wonderful life here and now for all who will humbly yield to Jehovah.  Leupold (p. 614) suggests that the words mercy (lovingkindness), truth (faithfulness), righteousness, peace, etc., are to include the divine elements of God’s characteristics—and the human response and imitation (through obedience) of the same characteristics.  I agree.  When we learn of God’s character and respond to His precepts, we can say (and sing) “My God and I go in the fields together.”  His footsteps become our pathway.  What a way to go!
