PROVERBS FOR YOU (Concluded)
(Proverbs 22:1-16)
This section began at Proverbs 10:1. It is a long list of short
proverbs. Usually they are only one verse long. At verse 17
of this chapter, we will come to a section of “The Sayings of the Wise”
(22:17-24:34; see 22:17 and 24:23). Proverbs 25:1 begins a new group
of proverbs by Solomon.
In this lesson, several of the recurring themes of the book are mentioned
one or more times.
I. THE SPIRITUAL NATURE OF THESE PROVERBS.
22:1: For soundness, fairness, reflection on God, etc.
22:4: Since this is true, how far will pride and defiance get us?
II. THE PRINCIPLE OF “RESPECT OF PERSONS.”
22:2: Who really made you—me—and them?
22:11: Be wise enough to love the right “things” and you will please
the right people!
III. THE LESSON OF SOWING AND REAPING.
22:3: Applied to wisdom.
22:5: Applied to self-preservation.
22:8: Applied to sin and sorrow.
22:12: Applied to God’s “memory.”
IV. THE POWER OF PROVERBS FOR THE HOME.
22:6: A principle that covers all areas of life—this verse could be
a parent’s greatest challenge.
22:15: How does this fit with the recently seen “Spare the rod and
love the child” bumper sticker?
V. THINGS, THINGS, AND THINGS.
22:7: The poor borrower.
22:9: The generous giver.
22:16: The double abuse.
VI. SIN SOLUTIONS
22:10: Regarding attitude and tongue.
22:13: Regarding attitude and work.
22:14: Regarding morals and God’s attitude.
