Five Steps of Man with GOD

Lesson Four:

1. Read Revelation, chapters 4 and 5; then read Psalm 111. Place a check mark before each chapter after reading it.

Revelation 4

Revelation 5

Psalm 111

2. Worthy is God to receive blessing, honor, glory, and power.

True False

3. Match the reference with the appropriate act of worship (each item in the right-hand column is used twice).

I Corinthians 16:1,2              a. Sing
Acts 20:7-11              b. Study
Acts 2:42              c. Pray
Ephesians 5:19              d. Give
Matthew 6:9-13              e. Lord’s Supper
Hebrews 4:14-16
Colossians 3:16
II Corinthians 8,9
Matthew 26:26-29
II Timothy 4:1-5

4. God does not accept just anything that we offer Him.
True False

5. God only accepts that which His word teaches is pleasing to Him.
True False

6. The New Testament teaches that we must worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).
True False

7. Some things that we do in worship can make our worship vain (Matthew 15:9).
True False

8. The basis for authority today is (see Colossians 3:17).

9. Whenever the early church deviated from the pattern for worship.

SING

 10. Ephesians 5:19: " to in Psalms and hymns and songs, and making in your to the Lord."

This verse teaches that we are all to sing, and that this singing its to be from the heart (the "instrument"). This verse does not endorse any other kind of music than singing.

11. Colossians 3:16: "Let the of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; and one in and hymns and spiritual songs, with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
We are to sing to the Godhead! This verse is a parallel to Ephesians 5:19. It, too, does not give any  authority for any other kind of music than singing (such as humming, clapping, using musical  instruments). And this verse also teaches that we are all to sing ("teaching and admonishing one another").

12. I Corinthians 14:15: "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will with the spirit, and I will with the also."

There is no verse in the New Testament that speaks of any other kind of music as worship to God in the church except singing. Only singing meets all of the requirements found in these verses!

STUDY

 13. Match the phrase with the passage from which it comes.
he was buried             a. II Timothy 4:1
I declare unto you the gospel             b. II Timothy 4:2
Shun profane and vain babblings             c. II Timothy 4:3-5
I charge thee             d. I Corinthians 15:1,2
Study to show thyself approved             e. I Corinthians 15:3
Christ died for our sins             f. I Corinthians 15:4
Preach the word             g. II Timothy 2:14,15
They will not endure sound doctrine             h. II Timothy 2:16-18

II Timothy 4:1-5 teaches that Timothy had a grave responsibility to do the work of the evangelist and that the hearers also had a responsibility not to desire anything but the word of God.

I Corinthians 15:1-4 teaches us that the gospel includes the fundamental message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

II Timothy 2:14-18 teaches us that Timothy was responsible to help people remember that which was true. He was to do this by using the Bible correctly in his own study! He was to avoid all things that would lead his hearers astray and overthrow their faith.

This pattern (see also I Timothy 2) for preaching the word includes the fact that men are to do the preaching. Women are not given the role of being preachers to mixed audiences anywhere in the New Testament.

PRAY

 14. Matthew 6:9-13 says: "After this therefore pray ye: Our which art in heaven, be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in , as it is in heaven. us this day our daily . And forgive us our debts, as we our debtors. And lead us not into , but deliver us from : For thine is the , and the , and the , for ever. Amen."

There are several items in this prayer that are to be in our prayers today. But there is one item that we should not pray for—since it has already been fulfilled—"Thy kingdom come." When Jesus said this, His kingdom had not come yet. But later He said it would come in their lifetime (Mark 9:1). It did come in Acts 2, so we must not pray this today.

15. Hebrews 4:14-16: "Seeing then that we have a , that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be with the feeling of our; but was in points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain , and find to help in time of need."

Christians have the right to boldly approach the throne of grace as a result of the mediation of Christ and His experience of having lived "where we live." At the same time, let us not make our prayers  totally a matter of "asking." Let us pay God His due homage, reverencing Him as He deserves to be  reverenced, giving Him praise and honor in our prayers.

16. I Timothy 2:5,8: "For there is one , and one between God and men, the Christ Jesus...I will therefore that pray , lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting."

Verse 5 shows that prayer is to God through Christ. Verse 8 shows that Paul was instructing men to lead the prayers (note further instruction in the rest of the chapter on your own).
Many would like to think and claim that parts of this chapter are outdated and do not apply today (particularly the instructions regarding the roles and authority of men and women). But there is no  reason for us to believe this claim. Paul was a genuine apostle, his writings were given to him by the Holy Spirit (Who got them from Christ, Who got them from God; see Lesson 2), and these things are just as authoritative today as when they were written.

GIVE

 17. Read these verses and answer the questions that follow:

I Corinthians 16:1,2: "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."
II Corinthians 8:5: "And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God."
II Corinthians 9:6,7: "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver."
Acts 2:42: "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."

Questions on the above references:

a. Concerning what kind of collection was Paul writing?

b. What other churches had received this order?

c. Upon what day of the week was this collection to be taken up?

d. How were they to decide how much to give?

e. What did some people do "first" according to II Corinthians 8:5?

f. How will the one who sows sparingly reap?

g. How will the one who sows bountifully reap?

h. What should a Christian do in his heart before giving?

i. What two things should not be a part of our giving?

j. What kind of a giver does God love?

k. What word in Acts 2:42 includes giving (the Greek word is koinonia; translated "communicate" in Galatians 6:6)?

LORD’S SUPPER

 18. Matthew 26:26-29: "And as they were eating, Jesus took , and blessed it, and brake it, and it to the , and said, Take, eat; this is my . And he took the , and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my of the testament, which is shed for many for the of sins. But I say unto you, I will not henceforth of this of the , until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s ."

These verses clearly show the two items that are to be used in the Lord’s supper: and the of the . They also show that this is to be done in the kingdom (or church) of Christ, which is exactly what took place in Acts 2:42, the "birthday" of the church!

19. Acts 2:42: "And they continued in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in of , and in prayers."

This was Pentecost (see verses 1-4) which was always a Sunday (Leviticus 23:15,16).

20. Acts 20:7: "And upon the of the week, when the disciples to , Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight."

They were continuing to observe the Lord’s supper on Sunday. There is no example or command that  gives us authority to observe the Lord’s supper any other way (unleavened bread and fruit of the vine) on any other day (every Sunday).

21. Words of warning: God has always expected to be worshipped according to what He said He wanted.

The test for our worship is that true love  will always obey God through Jesus Christ.

"By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name."
